PAVIORS GOLFING SOCIETY

Woburn

The Paviors Golfing Society played Captain's Day at Woburn on 20th July 2005.  On the evening before the golf day an "advance party" comprising a number of Paviors and guests arrived at the Inn at Woburn.

The Inn which is situated in the centre of the small market town has been a welcome sight for travellers for nearly three centuries.  Opened in 1724 as a coaching inn, it was a popular stop for Royal Mail stages travelling between London and the North.

Those of us who stayed at the Inn found it homely and comfortable.  Needless to say, the evening was great fun but, for a number of us, any advantage gained from staying in close proximity to the course, ready for an early morning start, was slightly eroded by the late night that preceded it!

In 1974 the late 14th Duke of Bedford had the foresight and courage to see that a world-class golf facility could be created at Woburn.  No other club is able to offer its members and guests a choice of three courses all ranked by Golf World Magazine in the top 100 courses in the British Isles.  This puts Woburn in an unrivalled position and means any day spent on any one of the courses is truly memorable.

The Paviors and Guests played two of the beautifully maintained courses (Dukes and Duchess) amidst tree lined fairways set against blue skies.  Feedback regarding the day from Society members was very positive.  Woburn proved to be a popular choice in this year's Paviors golfing calendar.

Prizes were as follows:

Paviors                             Guests
1  Clive Walker              1  John Grainger
2  Doug Weston             2  John Kemsley
3. Keith Lambert             3  Steven Keely

Tandridge

The 3rd of November was the last date in the Golfing Society year and Tandridge was the venue.  The parkland course, with some heath land characteristics, is regarded as an excellent test of golf, and was designed by Harry Colt, one of the foremost architects of his day.

Attractive woodlands and superb views of the nearby North Downs and of the Kent and Sussex countryside in the distance make this course a pleasure to play.

Thursday 3rd November 2005 could have been one of the wettest days of the year had the rain that fell in the early hours continued.  The weather signs for the golf day were not good.  However, arriving at Tandridge for a 9am start (after bacon rolls and coffee), the skies began to clear and, for a substantial part of the round, most players remained dry!

Prizes were as follows:
