Paviors Golf Society

The Annual Dinner of the Paviors Golf Society is one of the many enjoyable events of the Company's year.  As in 2005, the location this year was the Watermen and Lightermen's Hall and around 35 Liverymen, Freemen and Guests attended a very sociable and enjoyable occasion.  The Dinner was held in the Freeman's Room incorporated into the Hall in 1983, this fine room has recently been extensively refurbished to very high and exacting standards.  A major feature of the room is a display of some of the Watermen Company's historic uniforms and silver.  It is also rumoured that the corpse of Lord Nelson was laid in the Hall before his funeral at St Pauls Cathedral.

The Golf Society's annual committee meeting preceded the dinner where, having discussed general organisational issues (and in particular the Charity day at Woburn), members contemplated golf for 2005 and the prospect of playing Swinley Forest (May), Woburn (July), St Georges Hill (September) and Tandridge (November).  The newly appointed Captain for 2006, Frank Loughlin, proposed the Toast to the Guests, which was responded to by guest John Grainger, who was very complimentary and obviously impressed with the Society's level of support.

After dinner at Waterman's Hall, last year's Captain (James Dickson) was presented with the Jubilee Trophy Award for highest aggregate score over three rounds and John Dance was presented with the Winter Challenge Cup for Paviors' first prize at Tandridge in November 2005.

Captain's Day will again be at Woburn.  With the agreement of the Master, David Laing, the Paviors Golfing Society will host a major Charity Celebrity Golf Day in support of the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK.  Keith Lambert anticipates being able to host 36 teams, each team consisting of three and a celebrity.  The celebrity list is being finalised in liaison with the Charity.  The cost of entering a team of three is £1,500, a very substantial proportion of which is donated to the Charity.  All proceeds after costs will be donated to the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research, dedicated to research into bowel cancer, the second highest cause of cancer death after lung cancer.

Stephanie Moore will be attending and the day will include a silver service dinner and auction following the golf plus some unexpected entertainment?  Support would be very welcome from Sponsors and/or donations for the Auction to Keith Lambert.

THE BOBBY MOORE FUND FOR CANCER RESEARCH UK  was established by Stephanie Moore MBE and Cancer Research UK in memory of Bobby Moore, to raise money for research into bowel cancer.  The Fund was set-up following Bobby's death from the disease in 1993 and since then the charity has raised over £5 million for bowel cancer research.  All funds raised go towards bowel cancer research.  Registered charity number: 1089464.  For further information visit the Bobby Moore Fund website www.bobbymoorefund.org (see also Supplement).
Paviors are invited to support the Celebrity Golf Day and help the Bobby Moore Fund tackle bowel cancer.

Swimathon 2006--Sponsors  Needed!!!

This year's Swimathon is set for the 8th May.  We have had a good uptake of volunteers prepared to swim.  Each swimmer swims 1,000metres and is looking for further sponsors for the Lord Mayor's Charity.  This year the Lord Mayor's Charity is the Treloar Trust, which is in its Centenary of being founded by a Lord Mayor of London and which has had close links with the City.  The Treloar Trust runs both a school and a college of further education for severely disabled people.  You can find out more about the Trust on www.treloar.org.uk.  (see also Supplement).

This year our Master, David Laing, has agreed that 50% of the funds raised will go towards the Tom ap Rhys Pryce Memorial Fund.  You may remember that Tom was the young lawyer who was murdered outside a tube station in January.  Tom's parents, who are friends of Tom Barton (Tom's Father is a Civil Engineer), have set up this Charity to help to provide education to enable those who cannot otherwise afford it to gain access to appropriate educational facilities.  This is of course in line with one of the Livery's key objectives of raising money for education.  I attach a copy of details of the Memorial Charity.

I do hope you will be able to support us.  If you are able and/or if you know anyone else who can support us I would be very grateful if you could make any cheques payable to the Worshipful Company of Paviors' Charitable Trust and please send to Tom Barton either by ringing 01483 722083, by post to Yonder Cottage, 34 Brewery Rd, Woking, Surrey GU21 4NA or by e-mail to ttmhbarton@yahoo.co.uk.  All help and support will be greatly appreciated.
