The Court has appointed Brian Johnson as Hon Curator of the Paviors Roadmaking Museum at Amberley. Brian will be the focus for the proposed renovation of the exhibition and will recruit a team of local volunteers with an interest in highways to help with the work. Brian is a retired West Sussex Town Planner. He has been a Trustee of the Amberley Working Museum since its foundation in 1974; he was involved in the discussions between the Museum and the Company in the 1980s, which led to the transfer and erection of the building for the Roadmaking Museum. He knows the building well and the shortcomings of the present display. Brian lives locally, owns a steamroller, and is a transport enthusiast. We could not have found a better man for the task ahead. A small but enthusiastic team of Paviors swept and cleaned the exhibition on 26 March. They enjoyed an open-top bus trip round the whole site prior to a picnic lunch. A report on the Family Day on 30 July will appear in the December Pavior. Robin Wilson |

The 2006 Paviors’ Medal for Excellence has been awarded to Dr Allan Dowson , a Freeman of the Company and a leading practioner in the development and production of precast paving. For many years he was responsible for research and development at Marshalls plc. Allan now has his own consultancy, but still contributes to the development of standards in the UK and the EU. He is a former Chairman of Interpave and a past-President of the British Precast Concrete Federation. The citation for the Paviors’ Medal reads ‘For his contribution over 40 years to the development and production of stone and precast products for use in a variety of applications in roads, footways and gardens’. The Medal will be presented at The Annual Banquet at the Mansion House on 28 September 2006. Robin Wilson |
