TERENCE PATRICK HANTON 1926 - 2006

Terry Hanton died on June 16th , aged 79, after a long and debilitating illness. He had been a member of the livery for 29 years.

Terry spent his working career in the asphalt industry and was one of the many Paviors who came from the Limmer and Trinidad group of companies. He specialised in the use of asphalt in building and in the 1950s went out to Trinidad, where he headed up three Caribbean mastic asphalt contracting companies. The knowledge gained during this time made him a world expert in tropical roofing technology.

In 1966, he returned to the U.K. as chief executive of, first, the Previte organisation and subsequently Wells (Trinidad Lake Asphalt) Ltd, marketing lake asphalt throughout the world until his retirement in 1997.

Terry served as a paratrooper and trialled as a football professional. In later years he was an ardent Everton supporter and also played cricket and tennis at club level. An active churchman , he held office in the Cathenian charitable organisation for many years.

He is survived by Maureen, his wife for 52 years, their three children and seven grandchildren to whom the Company sends its most sincere condolences.

DEREK SIDNEY LITTLE 1929 - 2006

Past Master Derek Little died on 25th March at the age of 77. He was a Pavior through and through, most of his working life spent on the design, construction and maintenance of airfields, airports and their environments.

On leaving school, Derek joined Travers Morgan, subsequently as a civil engineer at the Northampton College, now City University. This was followed by National Service, which was extended into a five year commission during which he became Officer Commanding 5001 Airfield Construction Squadron, based in the Middle East.

After leaving the RAF, he worked for the Air Ministry, building military airfields in the UK and the Far East, before transferring to the British Airports Authority where for the next 20 years he designed and supervised the construction of many projects at Heathrow, Gatwick and overseas.

Derek joined the Company in 1962 and was elected to the Court in 1982. In 1991 he became Master, shortly after his retirement from BAA. One of his major achievements during his year of office was to resolve many of the difficulties which had arisen relating to the Company’s museum project and it is much to his credit that the Road makers display at Amberley exists today.

He will be remembered as a convivial companion, never happier than with a glass of malt whiskey and a top quality Havana cigar, while his great delight was his philatelic collection. His easy going  style tended to diffuse issues before anyone else realised they were even contentious. To his widow Riene, his two sons, Marc and Grant and his daughter Kim we offer our most sincere condolences.
