The Paviors' Award

The Master David Laing (left) accompanied by the award judge Mike Cottell (right) presented a certificate and street "button" to Deputy John Owen-Ward (the chairman of the City Planning and Transport Committee) on the site on the 25th July 2006.

The Paviors' Award is a competition for excellence in street paving and is run in conjunction with the 'Local Government News' for schemes constructed and opened in 2005/6.  There are six categories and about eighty schemes were considered for the Paviors' Award this year.  The judging panel is interested in projects which demonstrate imaginative design, possibly with sculptured or water features and which use attractive and high quality materials.

In making the award to The Old Bailey in the City of London the judges were very impressed by the approach adopted by the City of London Planning Department and their Consultant designers Burns and Nice Ltd, and also the high quality of the construction carried out by F.M. Conway Ltd.

Bursaries

The Charity Committee has supported postgraduate education through a £11,000  bursary scheme in recent years at the Universities of Birmingham and Nottingham and at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. In the summer issue of The Pavior, the PhD research work being conducted by Phillip Boothroyd at the Nottingham Centre for Pavement Engineering was featured. News is provided here about the other students who held bursaries in 2005-06.

Angela Runge is from the USA and is a mezzo-soprano who completed an MMus degree at the Guildhall School this summer. She would have had difficulty in doing this without the bursary and clearly had a hardworking, enjoyable year in London. She writes, "… Both the classes and my private lessons were wonderful. Not only was the School a wonderful experience but having the chance to live in London has been a positive learning experience as well. …Now I am applying to opera programmes both here and in the USA and I hope to return to England sometime soon."

The Birmingham bursaries went to four MSc students who studied Road Management and Engineering, all of whom were clearly very grateful for the financial support  (as follows):

Thomas Burn obtained a merit and is currently working for Costain on the A2 Dartford improvement scheme.

Richard Monaghan carried out a project involving the preparation of an emergency response plan for roads and is presently applying for posts with high profile companies in the highways sector.

Michael Barnet did the course on a part-time basis and achieved a distinction. He is presently with Nottinghamshire County Council.

Dipak Morarji is also a part time student with interests in highway engineering in developing countries. He has achieved excellent marks to date and will complete his studies at the end of the year.

Nominations for further bursaries will be submitted shortly.
