The winning scheme for the 2004 Paviors’ Award is the town square at Downham Market in Norfolk.

In 2004 there were 22 two schemes considered in this category. In making the award to this scheme, the judges considered the project to be an excellent example of paving in York Stone, with interesting features, including a drinking-water fountain and a wall with five sulptured pictures drawn by local school children. The scheme has transformed a car park in the town centre into a town square where people can meet and concerts held. The town clock, located in the Square, is currently being renovated and the town hall and other shops and offices around the Square are also being improved to create an environmentally interesting square in this small town on the edge of the Fens.

On 14 July, the Master, John Mills, accompanied by the Paviors’ Award judge, Mike Cottell, travelled to Downham Market to award a certificate and ‘street button’ to the Mayor of Kings Lynn and West Norfolk Borough Council, Councillor Paul Brandon, and the Mayor of Downham Market Town Council, Councillor Mrs Pat Roberts.
