Winter Challenge Trophy

For our final event of the year, we are delighted to return to:

Effingham Golf Club, Guildford Road, Effingham, Surrey, KT24 5PZ

The format for the day is as follows:

8:15 – 9:00 – Registration with tea/coffee and bacon rolls.

From 9:30 – 10:30 – Morning round:18-hole individual Stableford competition, full WHS handicap, plus nearest the pin on two holes for both members and their guests.

Around 3:30pm – Two-course lunch, with the prizegiving to follow.

Smart casual wear is acceptable for lunch, gentlemen are required to wear long trousers, shirts with collar and sleeves or polo necked sweaters.

The charge for the day is £135.00

Paviors’ and Society Members will be playing for ‘The Winter Challenge Cup’

We must guarantee a MINIMUM of 16 players but can accommodate up to a MAXIMUM of 28.

Guests as always are very welcome with individual prizes available.

If necessary, please indicate a preferred start time, I will try to keep everyone happy. Start sheets will be emailed one or two days before the competition.

We have been lucky to be offered an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at St Paul’s on Wednesday 11th November, but space is limited due to the practical constraints of touring the old workshops.

At the conclusion of the tour, around 4:45 pm, those who wish to will be shown to reserved seating in the Quire for sung Evensong.

There is no charge for this tour, but you may make a donation on the day or via the Paviors.

The Silent Ceremony is the occasion upon which the new Lord Mayor of London is sworn into office, and it takes place on the day before the Lord Mayor’s Show (which is usually second Saturday in November). As the name implies, the actions of all the participants are performed in total silence apart from the swearing of the oath. Expect a procession of richly dressed liverymen and officials, the removal of the outgoing Mayor’s tricorn hat and the donning of that of the new, and the presentation of the various symbols of office to the new Mayor. These include sceptre, sword and badges and all are offered with a bow from their respective officers. The party then leave, also in silence, and the new Mayor and family can move into the Mansion House for their term of office. Visitors are given an explanatory sheet detailing the various participants and actions of the ceremony, and there are large screens around the sides of the Great Hall giving a close-up view of all the action.

2.00pm – Doors open
2.30 pm – All guests to be seated
Any latecomers after this time may not be admitted.
3.00pm – Ceremony begins
3.20pm – Ceremony concludes

Whilst there is no dress code for the Silent Ceremony, it is recommended to wear morning dress or similar.

The Paviors will not enter the Lord Mayor’s Show this year, but fundraising has started to restore or replace the Paviors’ Pig, ready for November 2027.

This year’s show will, of course, go ahead without us, and we look forward to seeing the Lord Mayor’s carriage on the streets of London!

A full agenda will be sent to all members of the Court of Assistants, the Court Emeritus, and the Honorary Court before the meeting.

We will welcome several new members to the Company.

The CYT will hold the “Building Future Skills with the Paviors” course with their industry partner, BW: Workplace Experts, from 1st to 3rd December. The presentation session will take place from 1 pm on the final day.

We have chosen to arrange the Christmas informal social event for Monday 14th December 2026 at 6.00pm prompt at the Butcher’s Hook and Cleaver, just by Smithfield Market.

The evening is an opportunity for all fellow Alumni, including Arkwright Scholars and Building Future Skills students, together with our Apprentices and others in education who have been supported by the Paviors’ Company, to meet and catch up with each other in an informal setting. There will also be a number of Paviors in attendance.

Parents are more than welcome to accompany the younger scholars.

The Paviors will once again enter the annual Inter-Livery Clay Shoot. Since its inception in 1993, it has been hugely successful in raising funds for charities nominated by the winning teams and includes a donation to the Lord Mayor’s charity. In excess of 450 guns attend each year, with teams of four representing over 55 Livery Companies. Each member of the team shoots 80 sporting birds over 12 stands, a 20-bird Two Man Flush and an 80-bird Team Flush.

The Paviors’ team has been allocated Day 2 of 2.
