Born Hans-Joachim Freiherr von Reitzenstein on 21 April 1925, John, the son of a German baron, fled to the United Kingdom with his Jewish mother in 1939. Although the Leech family adopted him, his biological mother stayed nearby and remained very much a part of his life.
John embarked on his career with L.G. Mouchel, marking the commencement of a series of significant roles. His work took him to India, where he engaged in impactful projects, and later to Europe House and the Federation of the Institutes of Mechanical Engineers (FIME). His tenure at the Control Data Corporation (CDC) and involvement with the Regional Information Office (RIO) underscored his commitment to advancing technological and informational initiatives. John was also instrumental in promoting the “West-West Agenda,” emphasizing the importance of fostering collaborations and understanding between Western nations.
John became affiliated with the Paviors through his adopted father in 1945, at twenty, and became a Liveryman in 1969. At the time of his death on 22 November 2024, he was part of the Court Emeritus and our oldest member. His life was celebrated with readings and music at the Travellers Club on 14 February 2025. Alexander Malmaeus (Renter Warden) and Davis Marshall (Almoner) represented the Worshipful Company of Paviors.
