Guildhall School of Music and Drama Gala Evening 9 July 2019
A group of 17 Paviors and guests joined others at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama at the Barbican for a summer Gala Evening on Tuesday 9 July.
After a drinks reception in the Conservatory Terrace, the group moved to the Garden Room for a two-course dinner of guinea-hen breast, followed by a delicious panna cotta with fruit compote, wine and coffee.
The diners then proceeded to the Silk Street Theatre, where the students presented an energetic performance of the musical Merrily We Roll Along, based on a book by George Furth, with lyrics and musical score by Stephen Sondheim. The story is about three people who meet as youngsters, become friends and whose lives then intertwine. However, the plot revolves around Franklin Shepard who, having once been a talented composer of Broadway musicals, has now abandoned his friends and his songwriting career to become a producer of Hollywood movies. The musical begins at the height of his Hollywood fame and moves backwards in time, showing snapshots of the most important moments in Frank’s life that shaped the man that he is today.
The show explored several themes: regret and disappointment, as well as ‘time’, with the time-clock counting backwards through the years. A large cast of talented performers kept the audience entertained and, with the unusual style of reverse-chronology, kept everyone on their toes. As Paviors have come to expect of the GHSMD, this was a superb performance and made for a very entertaining evening that raised money to support the work of the GHSMD.
