The Worshipful Company of Paviors hosted its first Alumni networking event at the Charterhouse on Tuesday 28 June.

The Alumni has been established to provide a forum and networking opportunities for students who have been supported by the Company’s educational programmes as they move into further education. The students benefit from information, advice and guidance about careers, university and college courses, interviews and the preparation of CVs. It is also a platform for work experience opportunities and mentoring .

The Master assembled the group, welcomed all to the event, and gave a brief introduction to recognize the importance of these opportunities for young people. Two Arkwright Scholars, Max Hacon and Griffin Daly, gave a brief talk about how they have benefitted from their scholarships, including mentoring and work experience, and described the stage they have reached in their civil engineering courses. They shared examples of the support given by the Paviors, expressing gratitude for the opportunities awarded by the programme and how it had helped their career progression.

Kieron Lock, from the Construction Youth Trust, interviewed the Budding Brunels students about their involvement in the programme and the benefits they have received. This has included networking sessions, site visits and work experience. All agreed that the programme had great benefits in helping them progress in their education, and to feel informed and motivated towards following careers in construction. The event was attended by seven past and present Arkwright Scholars, four Budding Brunels Plus students and others. Also attending were Upper Warden Miles Ashley, Past Master John Dance and a number of individual Paviors.

The Company invests a great deal of time and support in these students who, in turn, are very keen to continue the relationship and their involvement with the Paviors. A Paviors’ Alumni Facebook Group has been set up for current and past students to receive ongoing support and advice from members of the Paviors and associated sponsors, and to provide opportunities for networking and information sharing. Younger members of the Company are particularly encouraged to participate, as well as members whose companies can provide the networking support and opportunities needed. It is planned to stage a further event for the Paviors’ Alumni in December this year. Anyone who would like further information or would like to be involved and join the Paviors’ Alumni Facebook Group should contact the Clerk (details below).
