Can London survive? The City’s Dependence On Its Metro

The 2016 Paviors’ Lecture was given at Imperial College by Pavior Miles Ashley, Programme Director of Construction for London Underground. Miles is currently responsible for projects including the Northern Line Extension and station developments at Tottenham Court Road, Bond Street, Victoria and Bank. The title of the Lecture was Can London survive: the city’s dependence on its metro. The Lecture, the 41st in the series, was particularly popular this year and had to be relayed to a second lecture theatre to accommodate all who wished to attend.

The Lecture first described how the Underground has coped with London’s rapid growth and how it has been an essential enabling factor in the city’s expansion. It explored the current infrastructure schemes and the challenges of their delivery whilst keeping London moving. Finally, future development needs for London and its Tube were addressed, along with how these might be influenced by technology and innovation. As such, the presentation provided a fascinating, fast-moving and highly visual insight into the history of the London Underground, its ongoing activities and plans.
