An on-line quiz was organized by the Paviors’ Luncheon Club on the evening of Tuesday 23 June. There were 15 teams of participants.
The evening started by Luncheon Club Chairman, Tom Barton, noting the death on the previous evening of Paviors’ Past Master Andrew Panter MBE DL after a long illness. Andrew was a previous Chairman of the Luncheon Club and of the Paviors’ Liverymen’s Committee, in addition to being Master in 2009-2010. He will be sadly missed. The participants observed a period of silence in his memory.
The quiz was kicked off by Quizmaster, Paviors’ Clerk John Freestone, with a general knowledge round. The first letter of the answer to each question spelled out a well-known(?) phrase, which turned out to be ‘John the Clerk’! Good scores were generally obtained. The second round had ten questions, with answers all beginning with the letter ‘F’ and included answers such as ‘Fosbury Flop’ and ‘Flash Gordon’. There was a picture round next, before a final round with three questions each on science, sport and medicine.
The evening’s winner, with a very high score of 40 out of 50 points, was Past Master Dyfrig James – although it did seem that Dyfrig’s wife, Glesni, was actually responsible for getting most of the answers. They will receive a bottle of champagne.
Each team contributed a small fee to the Paviors’ Charity Fund in lieu of paying for attendance, and the quizzes to date have now raised well over £1,000. Thanks are due to Chairman, Tom Barton, for arranging the event and to the Clerk, John Freestone, for acting as quizmaster. It is hoped that, with the lessening of the Covid lockdown requirements, it would not be too long before future Luncheon Club events could be held in person.
