On Thursday 28 January, 26 Pavior households gathered in Zoom virtual mode for the fourth tasting arranged by the Wine Circle through the auspices of Justin Waples. On this occasion, the wines being sampled came from the Guntrum Estate in Rheinhessen, where the estate is home to one of the region’s largest vaulted brick cellars. Members were entertained in jubilant mode by Konstantin Guntrum, the 11th generation of the family to have been at the helm of the winemaking.

Three wines were tasted – Oppenheimer Sacktrager Riesling Trocken 2018, Nierstein Bergkirche Riesling Kabinett 2018 and Dornfelder 2019. Konstantin took participants through the different characters of the wines, explaining that each varied due to different soil locations on his estate and varying climatic conditions.

All agreed that the wines shown changed perceptions of German wines and interesting debate followed on food-pairings and wine-ageing capabilities. The tasting lasted approximately two hours. All agreed that it was a most enjoyable event – at least giving the opportunity to ‘see’ other Paviors again.
